Some common questions about Synergy Version 4 (V4) End of Life support

Updated over 4 months ago

Edition: Synergy desktop

User-level: System administrator

I do not have a v4 perpetual licence. How do I get it?

Perpetual licences were issued for historical purposes when you or your company migrated from Synergy v4 to Cloud or did not renew your Synergy contract. If you are unable to locate the licence file, please get in touch with v4 Support at support@totalsynergy.com

Which device does the perpetual licence need to be installed?

A Synergy V4 system administrator can install the licence file using the V4 desktop client. This action can be performed on a workstation connected to the V4 database or the server hosting your Synergy V4 database.

The license is applied to the Synergy database rather than desktop clients.

Can the desktop software be installed again on a new or different PC and then the perpetual licence installed?

Once the licence has been applied to your Synergy database, you do not need to re-apply it if you need to install the desktop client on a different PC.

How do I install the perpetual license?

Two options are available:

A. Download from Cloud

Open the client File > Database > Check for updated license

B. Install manually

You can use the following steps to apply it to your V4 database if you have the licence file:

  1. Save the attachment and then unzip it

  2. In your Synergy desktop client, go to File > Database > Import new license

  3. Browse to the extracted license file to select it, then click Open

How do I know if the licence is installed correctly?

You can check the license details using the Synergy V4 client. Open the client, then select File > Database > Properties.

The license's user count will display as “1,” and the expiry year will display as “2054.”

Can this perpetual licence be transferred to another device if the current PC/Laptop crashes or is retired?

Once the license has been applied to your Synergy database, it will remain part of it. This means you can install the Synergy client on another device without reloading the license.

How do I take a Backup of your Synergy v4 system and database?

Database backups are run on the server or workstation that hosts your Synergy database.

There are several ways that you can back up your Synergy database.

  1. Scheduled backup: A Windows batch file is generated through the Synergy desktop client on your server. The Windows task scheduler can then be used to run the batch file as frequently as required (Daily, Weekly, etc.). You can use a third-party tool to transfer the backup file to an alternate location. This process is described in the image below.

When this method is used, the backup file is overwritten each time the backup task is run.

2. Quick backup: This method allows you to backup your Synergy database using the Synergy desktop client. It can only be run on the server.

To make a quick backup:

1. In the Synergy desktop client, select File > Database > Database Backup

2. Select Quick Backup

3. The backup folder path will default to the location of the Microsoft SQL instance on your Synergy database server. Click Browse to nominate an alternative location.
The backup name defaults to the name of the database, followed by a date and time stamp.

The backup destination folder will open automatically when the “Open backup directory“ checkbox is ticked.

NOTE: The Schedule a backup option on the Database Backup Options screen should not be used as it was designed to work with older versions of the Synergy desktop product.

How do I access my backup?

The database backup location can vary depending on the backup method used.
Database backup files are typically saved on the same server as the Synergy database, so a search on the server will allow you to locate it.

If the scheduled backup option has been used to backup the database, the backup file will be called Synergy_Backup.bak.

If the quick backup method has been used to back up the database, the file name will be something like Synergy202407081228.bak.

The date and time stamp on the backup file can be used to verify that it’s a recent backup.

How do I take a Backup using SQL Server Express?

On the Synergy database server, log into SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) and connect to the SQL instance.

Once connected, right-click on the Synergy database, then select Tasks > Backup.

Is it possible to restore projects from the archive in Version 4 (bulk restoration)?

  1. In the Synergy desktop client, select Projects > Project Archive

2. Select 'All projects in Archive'

3. Select 'Unarchive' button highlighted in red to restore in bulk
