Dashboard Explained
Ratio of new work won to work delivered (revenue earned) over time. Book to Burn is a lead indicator of future revenue — if the firm is burning through work faster than it's winning new work, the forward pipeline is at risk and business development effort needs to accelerate.

How to use it
Monitor Book to Burn monthly as a leading indicator of firm health. A consistent ratio above 1.0 means the firm is winning work faster than it's delivering — a positive sign for forward revenue. If the rolling ratio drops below 1.0 for more than two consecutive months, this is an early warning that the backlog is declining and business development needs to be prioritised. Cross-reference with Backlog Evolution in the Planning module to confirm the trend in absolute backlog value.
Understanding your data
Key Fields | How it's Calculated |
Work Won (Monthly) | Total fee estimate of proposals that were Won in each calendar month. Represents new contracted work added to the firm's portfolio |
Work Delivered / Burned (Monthly) | Total invoiced revenue in each calendar month. Represents work already delivered and billed — the rate at which existing contracted work is being consumed |
Book to Burn Ratio | Work Won divided by Work Burned for each month. A ratio above 1.0 means more new work was won than delivered — the firm is growing its pipeline. Below 1.0 means work is being consumed faster than it's being replaced |
Rolling 3-Month Book to Burn | 3-month rolling average of the Book to Burn ratio, smoothing out month-to-month fluctuations to reveal the underlying trend |
Backlog | Cumulative total of Won work not yet delivered: agreed fees on active projects minus invoiced revenue to date. Represents the firm's forward workload from existing contracts |
